The Evolution of POW
The Evolution of POW
Five years ago, I minted a million POW tokens for fun and started giving them away. There was no whitepaper, no roadmap, no promise of returns. I saw POW as a thank-you, a small on-chain token of gratitude for the people who followed me and supported my work. I even wrote an article about it: www.proofofwriting.com/26
Over the years, about 400,000 POW tokens have found their way into people's wallets, one gift at a time. The supply is fixed forever. 1 million POW. There's no mint baton, no inflation, no second batch. What exists is all there will ever be.
For a long time, that was pretty much the whole story. I still see it as a gratitude token, but now the gratitude isn't just coming from me. It's built into the platform itself.
What POW does now
POW is now the currency of a weekly rewards program. The idea behind it hasn't changed: it's a gratitude token, but one that is now sent to those who help make Proof of Writing more valuable to others. I'm not selling POW. I'm giving them away to people who contribute, and I'm building actual uses for them into the platform. More on that later.
So how is POW awarded? Every week, a fixed pool of POW is distributed to contributors, split by a single number we call your Contribution Score. That score has three parts:
Economic (35%) — the real revenue your activity generates for the platform. Not how much XEC you move around, but the actual fees that reach the platform when people spend XEC to unlock an article, publish, or interact. It uses a square-root curve, so a large purchase earns meaningful credit without letting one big spender vacuum the whole pool.
Creation (35%) — what you make: articles, posts, replies, quotes. Each is worth points, but every category is capped each week, so quality and range beat flooding the feed with filler.
Engagement & Growth (30%) — activity that engages other people: unlocking someone's article, sparking replies, being read, and other actions that create genuine activity. It rewards breadth: engaging twenty different people counts for far more than pinging the same account twenty times.
The three parts are combined into a single Contribution Score, and the weekly pool is divided proportionally according to those scores, with a cap so no single person can receive more than 10% of any week's pool. Then it's sent straight to your wallet, automatically, every week. No claiming, no forms.
We're going to start small and see how the system performs in the real world, distributing 1,000 POW/week to start, with plans to significantly increase that amount as we go.
How the reward system works
The hard part of any rewards system isn't the math. It's deciding what to reward, because whatever you reward, you get more of.
Reward transactions, and you get wash trading. Reward volume, and you get spam. Reward raw content, and you get slop. Every one of those is easy to game, and none of them makes a platform people actually want to be on.
So I am trying to optimize for behavior that makes the place better for everyone else. That's the whole design philosophy, and it's why the anti-gaming is so important. Only revenue that actually reaches the platform counts, so two accounts paying each other in a circle generate nothing. The square-root curve means you can't buy your way to the top. Engagement only counts genuine, independent users, and interactions between linked accounts are filtered out before anything is tallied. Farming isn't so much blocked as pointless.
The result is a flywheel. You make something worth reading. Other people find it and pay to unlock it. You earn XEC, the platform earns a little, and everyone who participated earns POW, giving them a reason to come back and do it again. Value in, value shared, value returned.
And POW stays what it always was: a token of gratitude, not an investment. It isn't deflationary, it isn't a bet on a price, and the system isn't designed to reward people simply for holding it.
Where this goes
This is the foundation, not the finished building.
POW already has a purpose beyond the weekly gift. You can mint your handle NFT with it. 10 POW for the lowest tier NFTs, 100 POW for the mid-tier, and 1000 POW for the top tier. Eventually, the plan is to be able to spend POW to boost your posts and articles as well. The plan is for POW spent on the platform to flow back into the reward pool and be earned again, creating a circular economy where the token can keep moving through the platform instead of simply disappearing after it's spent. POW also trades on eCash's Agora marketplace, so holders who want to sell can do so.
There's also the @POW_Agent1 account, which posts a daily scoreboard of the top contributors and announces each week's rewards. Every day at 00:00 UTC, you will see the top 10 contributors, and at the end of each week, how much POW was received. For your personal score, you can access your dashboard and see exactly how many points you currently have. Everything is out in the open. The goal is for the pool to grow, the rewards to reach more people, and the community to grow with it.
I don't know exactly where it ends up. The weights will shift as we watch real behavior. New ways to earn and spend will appear. But the direction is fixed, and it's the same one it's always been: reward the people who make Proof of Writing more valuable to each other, and let the gratitude keep circulating.
A million tokens, given away one thank-you at a time. Five years later, they're finally doing what I always hoped they would: giving something back to the people who give something to everyone else.
