There are moments in life that don't look important when they're happening.

You're tired. You have deadlines. Someone invites you somewhere and your first instinct is to say no. I almost said no. And sometimes I think about how different everything would be if I had.

In 2022, I was doing what most Filipino freelancers do: juggling clients, chasing invoices, quietly wondering if this was all there was. Good months felt borrowed. Slow months felt like warnings.

I wasn't looking for anything new. I was just trying to keep up.

That's when a colleague invited me to Coinfest Asia, a crypto conference in Bali, Indonesia. He mentioned it casually, like it was obvious I'd want to go.

I was not interested.

When I heard "crypto conference," my brain filed it immediately under: scam adjacent. That wasn't even a conscious thought. It was a reflex.

Growing up in the Philippines, you learn early to be suspicious of financial promises. Facebook investment groups. Passive income chat schemes. Neighbors who lost everything in something that sounded almost reasonable until it wasn't. My guard was up. Maybe too far up.

I told my colleague I'd think about it. What I meant was: probably not.

But Bali is only a few hours from Manila. And the way he invited me didn't feel like a pitch. It felt like one friend telling another about something worth seeing. So I booked the flight. I packed light. And I told myself I'd leave early if anything felt wrong.

I walked in mentally ready to spot the red flags.

That's not what I found.

Major exchanges had booths. Influencers I'd only ever seen on YouTube and Twitter were on stage having real conversations, not about price predictions, but about technology, monetary systems, and why any of this actually matters. Developers, founders, investors, and curious newcomers like me, all under the Bali sun, talking seriously about the future of money.

Nobody was performing. They were thinking out loud. Debating. Sometimes disagreeing.

It felt nothing like what I had imagined. It felt like a community that had been building something for years and knew exactly why they were still building it.

I went back to my hotel quieter than expected.

I didn't buy anything that night. I started watching. Reading. Following people who talked about crypto the way those people in Bali did: with patience, with data, with a calm that felt earned.

I learned the four-year cycle. The difference between Bitcoin and the noise around it. What on-chain data actually tells you versus what the price chart shows you on any given Tuesday. I started to understand that most people don't lose money in crypto because crypto is broken. They lose it because they entered without understanding what they were walking into.

I had almost been one of those people. Not by buying blind, but by never walking through the door at all.

Skepticism doesn't switch off. It fades. One answered question at a time, one data point that turned out to be right, one decision held through the noise.

Then one day, something was in my portfolio that hadn't been there before. Not from luck. Not from a tip. From learning enough to make a decision and trusting it.

I sat with my phone for a long time.

Not because of the amount. But because of what it meant: that the conference I almost skipped, the community I almost dismissed, the education I almost never sought, had been real all along.

Manila to Bali is less than three hours. The kind of distance you don't think twice about.

But that short flight, the one I almost didn't take, to an event I almost didn't attend, on an invitation I almost ignored, turned out to be the longest journey of my financial life.

Coinfest Asia didn't give me a get-rich strategy. It gave me a door. And on the other side was a conversation about money I had never been invited into before.

In the Philippines, financial literacy isn't something most of us grow up with. We're taught to work hard, send money home, and be suspicious of anything that sounds too good, rightfully so. But that same suspicion can keep us from things genuinely worth understanding.

My crypto origin story isn't about a lucky trade or a perfect entry point. It's about a Filipino freelancer who was handed a door, almost walked past it, and found an entirely different way of thinking about money waiting on the other side.

Still in the skeptic phase? I was there too. The question isn't whether crypto is real. The question is whether you're willing to find out for yourself. Sometimes that starts with a short flight and an open mind.
