Nigeria has become one of the most active countries in the use of cryptocurrencies, but at the same time it is also one of the places where the most distrust exists when talking about this topic. This happens mainly because of the large number of frauds, scams, and pyramid schemes that have emerged around the crypto world.

Many people associate Nigeria with scam cases because for years online fraud became well known there, such as fake investments, phishing, and promises of quick profits. With the arrival of Bitcoin, USDT, and other cryptocurrencies, many scammers began using these assets because they allow fast transfers and, in many cases, are difficult to trace. This caused many people to start relating “crypto” with deception.

In addition, there are many fake projects that promise cloud mining, automatic trading bots, or miracle DeFi platforms that eventually disappear with users’ money. Many of these platforms claim to have teams in Nigeria or say they have connections with African companies, which increases international distrust even more.

Another major problem is the lack of clear regulation. Although Nigeria has huge crypto adoption due to economic necessity, inflation, and banking restrictions, for years there were conflicts between the government and cryptocurrency use. This created a more informal market, where P2P operations are common but often lack enough protection for users.

However, this does not mean that every project related to Nigeria is a fraud. There are also serious developers, legitimate blockchain startups, and very strong crypto communities. The main problem is that the country’s reputation has been damaged by years of bad practices. That is why today, when someone hears about a crypto opportunity linked to Nigeria, the first reaction is usually doubt and the need to investigate carefully before trusting.

In addition to general distrust, there are several examples of failed crypto projects and financial schemes in Nigeria that affected thousands of people. One of the most famous cases was MMM Nigeria in 2016. Although it started as a mutual aid system, it quickly turned into a Ponzi scheme that promised up to 30% returns in just 30 days. Millions of people invested their savings, but when the platform collapsed in December 2016, many families lost everything.

Another case was InksNation, a project that promised to eliminate poverty through a supposed cryptocurrency called Pinkoin. Its founder claimed that users would receive constant income just by participating in the network. However, the platform was accused of irregularities and was eventually blocked by regulatory authorities, leaving many doubts about its legitimacy.

More recently, CBEX (Crypto Bridge Exchange) appeared, a platform that promised huge profits through USDT investments and automated trading. Many users trusted it because at first they were able to withdraw small amounts, but later withdrawals were blocked. The EFCC (Nigeria’s anti-corruption agency) eventually classified it as a Ponzi scheme, affecting thousands of investors.

There were also platforms like Racksterli, 86FB, and Royal Q, which used aggressive marketing, trading bots, and unrealistic promises of daily profits to attract users. All of them eventually collapsed or disappeared.

These examples explain why, when someone hears about a new crypto project related to Nigeria, the immediate reaction is usually suspicion. The constant repetition of fraud has created a reputation that is very difficult to change, even for legitimate projects that are truly trying to innovate within the blockchain ecosystem.
