It's definitely another choice, and I want to live in a world where we have more choices, not less. Hopefully we can find others who would rather choose not to give away their attention for free.

Lurking is no longer free - not participating is opportunity cost.
But couldn't you say the same about not participating on any other platform? Or is it different because those platforms are free? I'm still trying to wrap my brain around things.
I suppose platform being free is not the right way to think about it. Most social media is tied to an advertisement marketplace, your attention is quantified and sold to the highest bidder in real-time at a very high frequency and very smart people make it such that you get exploited and they end up making a lot of money. Transaction here seems to be more fair, no? I choose to participate, if what I write is interesting I get paid if not so be it.
